Today most of us Lebanese have a vacation to celebrate Independence Day. And even though we liberated ourselves from the French Mandate back in 1943, how independent are we today when we still go to war on behalf of other countries?
So let’s talk about some real independence.
If you ever got beat up for being gay and fought back.
If you walk on the street and get called names, but hold your head up high.
If you cried when you were called foufou, pede & louteh in school but can now laugh when someone calls you that.
If your boss harassed you everyday cause you were different, and you quit.
If you’re a girl who bravely holds her girlfriend’s hand on the street.
If you wear what you wanna wear and don’t think twice.
If your parents wanted you to go to a shrink to cure you from being a lesbian and you refused.
If you got kicked out by your parents for being gay and slept on the street.
If you live alone with no family to support you and you still make it through the day.
If you live your life with no one to report to but yourself.
If you still love your country…that same country which has a law that criminalizes you.
Then you…my friend…you taste real independence every single day.
I celebrate Independence Day with you.
