I’ve heard of the book: “Gay Travels in the Muslim World”.
So imagine my surprise when I saw the Arabic translation of the book at Virgin Megastore.
The “gay” had been changed to “shazz” or “deviant”.
So the title is: “Deviant Travels in the Muslim World”.
What the fuck?
Who translated this book? The devil in the flesh…or Nidal El Ahmadiyye?
Akh akh…

Update:
As per Mr. George Azzi‘s comment on the LebLGBTMonitor: “The publishers corrected their mistake in the next edition. The writer was of course not aware of the meaning of the arabic word”.
One of the LebLGBTMonitor‘s admins also added:
“I followed the details of this incident from before until after the publication and I confirm that it was unintended and more of a linguistic error. My concern is that the publisher and author had the choice to delay distribution but they decided to go along with it as the books where already printed and it would have costed them a lot to reprint”.

I want the english version of the book. Can i find it in Virgin as well?
I think u can Hady.
Well. I find it stupid and I’m not defending anyone of course but…
It is called “Gay Travels in the MUSLIM world”.
The guy who translated it probably thought it would be an appropriate translation given that heavenly religions view homosexuality with negativity…
Yep. Still stupid.
Isn’t that written in the book, the name of the translator(s) ?
No that’s the name of the writer. Michael Luongo
With genres such as this, it is very rare that you will find the translator’s name in the copyright page.
LOL at nidal l ahmadiyye #latche
u r soooooooooooo lucky becuse in lebanon u have the chance to read this book
sadly deviant = GAY in the arab’s world 😦
I saw the LGBTmonitor post.
Printing Error? You can’t overlook something in the freaking cover.
Lies.
WTF :S
This is outrageous ! We should all send mails to the editor , who is the editor of the arabic version ?
And I don’t see the need for “Muslim world” , he could have said Arab world if he wanted to include us with him.
How very ignorant of that Luongo boy !
Yeah but Luongo wasn’t the translator, but the writer should have been more careful at the translation.
The thing with translation is that in the end, most titles and content are edited to be more “appropriate” for the market. It is sadly one of the downfalls in publishing in the Arab world.
True.
And I just remembered Maryam Nour when I read ur comment…The way she says “2ikra2ou ya 3arab!”.
Eh la2 eza heik 3enwein el kteb…eh a7sanlon ma yo2ro.
So, now that they have corrected it, what’s the new word they used?
I’m guessing “Methli”…
Reminds me of when I asked my dad why they use ‘methli’. I was like, “but, dad, doesn’t that mean perfect?” xD
Well, everybody’s perfect in their own way.
Nicely said 🙂
